Anceloti confirms he will retire ater real spell

Anceloti became the first ever coach to win all five of Europe’s top leagues when he claimed the Spanish title last season, and he capped a remarkable campaign by winning his second CL for the club

Carlo Anceloti confirmed on Saturday that he will quit football management when he eventually leaves Real Madrid, ending one of the most glorious careers of football’s modern era.

Anceloti had said in May that he would “probably” quit once he let Madrid, but he removed all doubt in an interview with Italian daily Ilmessaggero.

“This time at Real will end my career, ater Los Blancos I will quit,” said the 63-year-old.

“Real are the very top of football. It makes sense to call it quits ater my experience here.”

Anceloti became the first ever coach to win all five of Europe’s top leagues when he claimed the Spanish title last season, and he capped a remarkable campaign by winning his second Champions League for the club.

That was the 14th time Madrid had crowned themselves European champions and was the latest in a string of honours the Italian has won in a long career as player and coach.

He won three Serie A titles with Roma and AC Milan in the 1980s, as well as back-to-back European Cups with Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan in 1989 and 1990. He returned to Milan as coach in 2001 and in eight years at the San Siro won the 2004 league title and two Champions Leagues.

He also led Chelsea to a league and FA Cup double in 2010, seting a Premier League record of 103 goals scored in the process. He also won Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-germain in 2013 and the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich four years later.

Meanwhile, The Spanish season kicked off Friday with Osasuna beating Sevilla 2-1 at home in an opener that was decided by a borderline penalty similar to the type that Spain’s referees had pledged to eliminate.

Aimar Oroz converted a spot kick for the 74th-minute winner ater the referee ruled that Sevilla midfielder Papu Gomez commited a foul in the area.

Chimy Avila scored the first goal of the 202223 season in the ninth minute when he smashed a powerhouse header off goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and into the net.

Rafa Mir responded for Sevilla two minutes later when he rifled in a pass to the near post by Gómez. Both sides hit the woodwork with long shots before Oroz tilted the game the hosts’ way in Pamplona.

Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui questioned the penalty, which was called ater Jon Moncayola fell following a brush with Gomez.

Lopetegui said it was difficult to understand especially ater Spanish referees had met with teams this summer to say that they would raise the bar on what constituted a penalty.

“We had a meeting recently with referees whose central argument was that they no longer would call these litle penalties … so it is difficult to understand,” Lopetegui said. “In the meeting we had they told us completely the opposite.”

Sevilla finished the league in fourth place last season, qualifying for the Champions League. But Julen Lopetegui’s squad has been weakened following the exit of Diego Carlos and Jules Kounde, who formed one of the best pair of central defenders in the league.

Karim Rekik and Nemanja Gudelj, both mostly used as backups last season, played in their place. They setled in ater a shaky start when Osasuna pressed for the opener that soon came when Ávila slipped behind Gudelj to meet a cross at the far post.

New forward Alex Telles started for Sevilla. Isco Alarcon, Sevilla’s star signing from Real Madrid, was let off the squad as he trains to get into full fitness.

But Lopetegui has said that he hopes sports director Ramon Monchi Rodriguez, an expert at discovering talent at a good price, will reinforce his squad before the summer market closes at the end of the month.
